Saltley TMD Introduction

Exhibition Manager Details

Saltley TMD was a Traction Maintenance Depot located in Saltley close to Birmingham City Centre. The depot was situated on the east side of the line between Birmingham New Street and Water Orton. Our model represents the depot after May 1973 and designed to portray the location during the first 10 years of so as a TMD in mainly the BR blue era until the new order of the Class 58s started to appear. The layout was the brainchild of Richard Periam,  a long-term supporter of the Redditch Model Railway Club and one time member. With the help of several Club members Richard built the layout at his home. Always designed to be portable it was envisaged at some time it could become an exhibition layout. Unfortunately, on 7th September 2024 Richard passed away but his two sons Andrew and William were keen to see the layout completed as their father had wanted so donated the part finished layout to Redditch Model Railway Club. The aim is now to both complete the layout and make the necessary improvements so that the layout can become a fully fledged exhibition layout. With the layout the club has also acquired a number of suitable locomotives all of which are DCC sound fitted and together with similar locomotives owned by Club members we should be able to create a layout worthy of Richard’s vision to recreate a model of the scene he and his two sons would have seen on train spotting visits to the depot in the 1970s and early 1980s.
