Auch Ae is a
4mm scale model of the Scottish Region locomotive
shed coded 68F, set during the 1960s. The layout is
now virtually complete, with only the finishing
details still to be added. All of the trackwork has
been laid using Peco Code 75 track and is fully
wired for DCC operation. Point control is provided
by Cobalt iP Digital point motors operated through a
Cobalt Alpha Central integrated 12-way digital
switch unit, while train operation is controlled
using an NCE DCC system. The buildings are all
scratch-built and are based on Scottish railway
prototypes, helping to capture the distinctive
character of the region. The layout is operated with
a varied fleet of both steam and diesel locomotives,
many of which are fitted with working sound to
enhance the realism of operation. Construction of
Auch Ae has taken place over a number of years and
has been undertaken by a small group of members of
the Redditch Model Railway Club. Throughout its
development, the emphasis has been on fitting as
much operational interest as possible into a compact
space. This approach has resulted in a layout that
offers engaging operation while remaining practical
to transport, with the entire layout designed to fit
into a small hatchback car for exhibition use.
